Downloading XWeb
You can download XWeb from the
Sourceforge download pages.
There are different packages: the main
XWeb distribution and sometimes
XWeb Snapshots which
are newer than the official releases, offer more features but might be unstable.
Usually you should download the newest official version, the snapshots are used for
testing purposes.
The version numbers
Versions with a zero as major number (i.e. 0.1 up to 0.4) are alpha-versions, they are not well tested either, but they all
work.
All other versions have a major number and a minor number (e.g. 1.0 has the major number 1, and the minor number 0). The major
number denotes major changes, esp. those which render the program incompatible with old files. The minor number will be increased
when new features where added, bugfixes for a released version will be indicated by letters (e.g. 1.0a is the first fix for
1.0) and beta
versions are marked as release candidates with RC and number (e.g. 1.0RC1 was the first release candidate for the first official
release). This means they have all planned features but still need some testing. Note that we have a different definition
of stable than
some well known major vendors -- even XWeb 0.1 did its job quite well ;-)
